Preferred Freezer Services enlisted Keeley Construction to facilitate the build of their second freezer facility in Chicago. Being one of the largest cold chain logistics providers in the world required the facility to offer access to ports and intermodal rail yards, as well as temperature-controlled trucking. Railroad access, railcar storage, car, truck, and trailer parking, 17 truck dock doors, and a rail dock door were musts for the project
The fully automated 174,786 SF facility includes a 45,000 SF cooler (32* to 40* range) with 56’-6” clear height, a 7,000 SF blast freezer (-30*) with a 56’-6” clear height, and an 81,000 SF freezer (-10*) with a 56’-6” clear height. Additionally, the facility features a 9,000 SF office suite for staff. The exterior construction consists of 6” thick metal-faced, insulated panels for superior temperature control. The freezer facility is operated by unmanned cranes and conveyors, requiring an extensive placement and retrieval system and the support of a 1,000 KVA backup generator to support operations. The storage areas are cutting-edge with a 56’-4” racking system. Finished in 2009, the building was the first LEED-certified facility for Preferred Freezer Services.
